Copy of an early edition of Nadja, the classic Surrealist novel by André Breton (1896-1966), founder of the Surrealist Movement.
This copy, rebound in silver paper-covered boards, comes with a SIGNED DEDICATION by the author: “E. Van Moerkerken / très amical souvenir d’André Breton”.
Emiel van Moerkerken was a Dutch photographer who worked in the tradition of the French Surrealists in his early years (see our photography section). According to a note in his handwriting, this dedication was obtained in Paris, August 1936.

Fine publication, printed by Draeger Freres; one out of a series of superbly designed brochures issued by the French wine seller firm Nicolas; and the first of a small number designed by A.M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) one of the great graphic designers of the 20th century.
A very fine copy of this early Cassandre production, in typical Art Deco style, with only minor damage to the fragile spiralbound spine.

The frontispiece is an ORIGINAL COLOUR ETCHING (sheet size 36 x 27 cm, image size 14 x 18 cm) by Cobra-artist CONSTANT [Nieuwenhuys], numbered and SIGNED by the artist.
The image has also been added as an unsigned blind print.
Superb and delicate; mint in original white paper covered slipcase.
NB : This is the second collaboration between the two artists : in 1949 they created the book Goede Morgen Haan (which translates into something like Goodmorning, Rooster); one of the highlights in the field of Cobra publications.

Ten deluxe copies were signed by author and artist: another collaboration indeed.
Publication of this catalogue resulted in the making of the wonderful silkscreen listed underneath: their last ever collaboration.

An illustrated account of this meeting was issued as part of the 5th volume of the journal Etant Donné Marcel Duchamp; a copy of this issue, signed and inscribed by Nat Finkelstein is included.

This photograph, printed in 2005, measures 24 x 18 cm and has been fully titled "Chlopy, Poland, July 29, 1995 and SIGNED BY RINEKE DIJKSTRA on the back.

Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for her uncanny and thoughtful portraits series of teenagers and young adults: girls and boys of various nationalities at the beach, children of Bosnian refugees, Spanish bullfighters straight out of the arena, Israeli youngsters before and after military service, and here, documented for the first time, her series of photographs taken of aspiring, young ballet dancers. Her subjects are shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background. Formally, the images resemble classical portraiture with their frontally posed figures isolated against minimal backgrounds. Yet, in spite of the uniformity in the photographer's works, there is a marked individuality in each of her subjects.

Short historical novel, printed in a limited edition of 400 copies, with 12 etchings in various sizes by Xavier Leseur after LOUIS-EDOUARD FOURNIER (1857-1917), a French painter and illustrator, known for his famous painting The Funeral of Shelley, which is in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
Out of the 150 deluxe copies on Japanese paper or grand Vélin d’Arches, this is one of only 30 which show the etching in three states and which come with an ORIGINAL DRAWING BY LOUIS-EDOUARD FOURNIER, very delicately executed in pencil on one of the first blank leaves, fully signed.

Postcard showing a black and white reproduction of a watercolour executed by Herman Hesse (1877-1962) not only the author of Der Steppenwolf, Siddharta and other famous novels, but a skillful artist as well.
This card has been SIGNED AND DEDICATED BY HERMAN HESSE: "Herzlich grüsst Ihr H. Hesse".
A 1950’s piece from the collection of JOSEF ENGELRT, an engineer and architect who had met Hesse in Montagnola in 1920. The two men became close friends, and as Englert became wealthy in the late 1920s, he increasingly acted as Hesse's patron, commissioning calligraphic manuscripts from him, supporting private publications, etc.

Silkscreened print showing an image of Swiss-Hungarian art dealer/collector/author/publisher Carl Laszlo (1923-2013), originally a pen and brush ink drawing used for the front of the programme of one of Laszlo's plays from 1960.
This rather untypical Hundertwasser image was reproduced in actual size in silkscreen as a contribution for the second part of LA LUNE EN RODAGE, 1965, a deluxe artists portfolio issued by Carl Laszlo in a limited edition of 150 (plus 65 HC) copies.
Most copies were hand stamped with a red Japanese character stamp, this print shows two of these stamps.

Handbound in an exclusive binding stamp-signed CHAMPS (= Victor Champs, 1844-1912, a well known and prolific French bookbinder): full brown morocco with silk doublures and gilt inside dentelles, a finely shaped metal monogram mounted on the front, all edges gilt.
This fine prayer book (Ordinaire de la Messe/Cérémonies du Mariage/Messe de Mariage) was executed on occasion of the marriage of Maurice Marie Louis LENGAIGNE and Jeannne Marie Louise DAIX, in the town of Douai (French Wallonia), February 1892.
Although the illumination was done by the sister of the bride, the quality of the art work is surprisingly high.

This fine prayer book was executed on occasion of the marriage of Juliette PÉAN and Tony SAINT CLAIR, in the Eglise La Madeleine, Paris, France, October 1892.
Illumination done by an anonymous but highly skilfull artist.
NB: The marriage happened to be some sort of social event, as the Parisian periodical LA NOUVELLE REVUE had the following fashion report printed...:
“A la Madeleine, le 24, le mariage de Mlle Juliette Péan, fille du célèbre chirurgien docteur Péan, membre de l'Académie de médecine, avec M. Tony Saint-Clair, sous-lieutenant au 2t dragons, neveu de Mme la comtesse de Rancy, avait attiré foule nombreuse et très élégante. Mais ce courrier, déjà long, ne me permet guère d'énumérer toutes les toilettes que j'y ai notées pour les lectrices de la Nouvelle Revue. A la vérité, la mode, si variable qu'elle soit, dure cependant plus de quinze jours; je renverrai donc à ma prochaine causerie là description de quelques-unes d'entre elles."

Handwritten letter by the famous French romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) to a “Monsieur le Comte”, in brown ink on a sheet of tinted paper, verso and recto, finely signed.
This letter of recommandation concerns the request for financial support (“votre interest pouvait jamais été mieux employé”) of a young artist and sculptor named Francois Jouffroy.
The identity of “Monsieur le Comte” remains unknown, however, FRANCOIS JOUFFROY became a succesful artist and sculptor, who was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1832. In 1843 Jouffroy made a marble buste of Alphonse de Lamartine (see image above), now in the Musée Lamartine, Marcon, France.

These signatures were obtained during a short and hectic signing session at the Selfridge's department store, Oxford Street, London, July 14, 1971.

Artists include Jean BERAUD, Giovanni BOLDINI, Emile FRIANT, Jean-Leon GEROME, Leon Augustin LHERMITTE, Pierre PUVIS DE CHAVANNES, Georges ROCHEGROSSE and many others of lesser fame.
Out of the 616 deluxe copies printed for the CIRCLE DE LA LIBRAIRIE, this is one of only 16 (sixteen) copies on Japanese paper and one of only 12 (twelve) with a “suite complementaire de 24 epreuves sur Japon, avant lettre”.
This copy comes in a sturdy morocco binding masterfully executed in the early 20th century by the celebrated London based bookbinding firm ZAEHNSDORf: full blue calf, sparsely but tastefully gilt, the suite has been placed in a morroco-edged compartment skilfully incorporated in the back of the binding.
Curiously enough the spine reads “Salon de 1891”, which is a pity, as is the 2cm tear in the upper joint of the binding.

"A Box of Delights" issued in a limited edition of 500 copies, after a design by STORM THORGERSON, the artist who was responsible for the design of many of Pink Floyd's album covers.
Contains a signed copy of drummer Nick Mason's book Inside Out (London, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2004), 500 copies of which were hand bound in grey morocco with a colour image by Thorgerson set into the front, packed in a hinged buckram-covered decorated presentation box, 50 x 38 cm, also containing TWO SILKSCREENED PRINTS by STORM THORGERSON, measuring 50 x 38 cm, each numbered and SIGNED by the artist.
Also added, as issued: a booklet with additional texts by Nick Mason; a set of 12 colour postcards in a hardcover wallet; a Pink Floyd backstage pass; a set of drumsticks; a drum key; a badge; a woolly (Hi!) hat and an original Polaroid photograph showing Mason at work on the project.

Original pastel drawing on black paper: the ORIGINAL DESIGN used for the cover of CALLING FOR VANISHED FACES, a 1999 compilation album by Current 93, the Apocalyptic Folk Outfit founded by Tibet in 1984.
The sheet has been titled and signed by David Tibet in golden ink on the upper right hand corner.
We add a copy of the CD, the album was never issued on vinyl.
A wonderful piece of outsider art.
